A4 is the size most people reach for when they simply want to paint without thinking too hard about format: it fits standard frames, scanners and sketchbook-style storage, and it is large enough for a proper study without being unwieldy on a small desk. This cold press grain is the same balanced texture found across most of Scholar's watercolour range, so if you've used their A3 or A5 sheets before, the feel under the brush will be familiar.

Loose A4 sheets also make it easy to keep only the tools you need on your desk at once, rather than committing an entire bound pad to a single sitting. Pull one sheet for a colour test, another for the finished piece, and set the rest aside flat until you're ready for them.

Ten sheets is enough to get through a run of practice pieces, colour charts or gift-worthy small paintings before you need to restock, and the A4 format makes it simple to store finished pieces in a standard folder, sleeve or ring binder alongside other paperwork or a growing portfolio, without needing to trim anything down to fit.
